Handheld learning 2009

Well back home after packed 3 days ! completely interacted out an intense round of meeting mates old and new and the most intense twitter streamof any event ive been to. Forget gentle stream think ranging torrect . Whats interesting after a mention of the P word "Prensky" now I thiking maybe digital natives was a good model when the book Digital Natives, Digital Immigrants published in 2001 but it doesnt work for me now.

It seems ageist and almost one size fits all young people. They are not uniform but are a diverse and wide ranging landscape of skills and attiutude. I do believe adults can teach very young children to fear technology . The phrase stop playing with X you will break it springs to mind. Mick Waters used the idea that young people have gadgetgumption and we breed it out of them over the early years of school .
The idea I most like at the moment and would like your help to build on is one of  Residents V Visitors in the Digital world . Dave White Oxford University presented around this concept at ALTC2009 and his influential blog http://tallblog.conted.ox.ac.uk/index.php/2008/07/23/not-natives-immigrants-but-visitors-residents/

Great work which I fully credit and with Daves permission I aim to build on it . I believe this works well but needs refining .because you can be resident or visitor using different tools .
Second life I am hardly a visitor , Youtube I am visitor in terms of creating content I am a resident in terms of consuming content. Twitter I am fully resident and at time confuse twitter conversation with email or even voice conversation . Facebook I  was resident on but my visa( my need to use) has started to expire .
I think we need to create a model / table of the tools then tagging if resident or visitor based on a range of criterai time spent on activity frequency etc.  Anyone got a view and helping me build the model.  I will blog about the great experience at HHL09 but this idea has got inside my head and needs developing..

Richard Millwood a short history offline

Ok this is a becta related post but Richard is a mate . Its a really nicely written well informed piece of history of tech especially edtech  You must read it. Richard has influenced me a lot in the short time i've known him so go on download and read it. More detail below followed by link.

COW: Its all about Cassie COWan a nice girl from a Gwent valleys family who kills four people on the road because she used her mobile and lost her concentration for a few seconds. Gwent police is proud to have helped Brynmawr filmmaker Peter Watkins- Hughes in the production, which stars local drama students Jenny Davies as Cassie, and Amy Ingram and Laura Quantick as her friends, Emm and Jules.

It is hoped this film will become part of the core schools programme across Wales and the UK and ultimately worldwide.

Gwent Police facilitated the films crash scenes because we want to stop ALL drivers, but particularly young and new ones, from causing accidents.


Over 300 teenagers from all over Wales were auditioned to take part in the film, nine police vehicles were involved and both the police and air ambulance helicopters featured.

State of the art digital special effects were utilised to show the impact of what would happen inside the car during impact. 

Lyn Samuel, School Liaison Coordinator for Gwent Police said: We worked closely with the production team including the University of Wales Newport, Tredegar Comprehensive School and local partners including the council and Probation Service. The result is a very impactive road safety educational tool to help reduce the number of collisions involving young drivers across Wales. Chief Inspector John Pavett from Gwent Police Roads Policing Unit hopes the serious message in this film will hit home to viewers:

Making and receiving calls and texting whilst driving is still happening on roads not just in Gwent but all over the country"

Seeing a scenario, like the one Cassie goes through, played out right before your eyes makes you realise how extremely dangerous it can be and what devastating consequences it can have.

I hope that after watching this film motorists will think twice before picking up their mobile phone when behind the wheel and realise that a quick reply to a text message or answering a phone call is never worth putting theirs and other peoples lives at risk.

It should be noted that here in Wales, we use the word "taster" instead of "teaser" as we're giving you a "taste" of what the full 30-minute video is like.

Molenet Phase one report "the impact of mobile Learning published"

Publication definitely worth a read if your interested in mobile field. Well worth a read

Phase one of MoLeNET (2007/08) involved 75 colleges and 18 schools, approximately 10,000 learners and 2,000 staff, in 32mobile learning projects. The Learning and Skills Council provided funding for handheld technologies and supporting infrastructure. The LSN MoLeNET Support programme provided advice and guidance; systems and materials; face-to-face, on-line and on-site training and continuing professional development; on-line support including peer-to-peer support and knowledge and resource sharing. LSN research, and LSN supported practitioner-led action research, explored the impact of introducing mobile learning on learner retention and achievement, teaching and learning, learner experiences and participating institutions. The findings of the research are described in this publication.

an April 2009 survey (just published) by the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project shows that 56% of adult Americans have accessed the internet by wireless means, such as using a laptop, mobile device, game console, or MP3 player. The most prevalent way people get online using a wireless network is with a laptop computer; 39% of adults have done this.

The report also finds rising levels of Americans using the internet on a mobile handset. One-third of Americans (32%) have used a cell phone or Smartphone to access the internet for emailing, instant-messaging, or information-seeking. This level of mobile internet is up by one-third since December 2007, when 24% of Americans had ever used the internet on a mobile device. On the typical day, nearly one-fifth (19%) of Americans use the internet on a mobile device, up substantially from the 11% level recorded in December 2007. That’s a growth of 73% in the 16 month interval between surveys.

Transfer Network (DC-KTN) is looking to find five students to send to the IBC
in Amsterdam this year. The successful candidates will receive free entry to
the conference and exhibition and up to £1000 to cover travel and
subsistence expenses associated with attendance. In return, they will be
expected to run a workshop or seminar for their colleagues at their own
institution on the theme:
The most important technology trends in broadcasting over the next ten years
and the opportunities they create for our institution.
IBC brings together the best in the world of content creation, management
and delivery, showcasing the latest technologies. It presents an opportunity to
hear from, and network with, the leading players and thinkers in the industry.
The IBC conference runs from 10 -14 September and the exhibition from 11 -
15 September. We will liaise with the winners beforehand to decide the best

it makes me think how new media like twitter,facebook and not so new txt (AKA SMS) is a powerful tool . This is a flippant example but the parrallels between complex political situation and my own personal challenge are to me very marked .
