On  2nd of January 2010  he  left from London to cycle the 10,000 miles to Cape Town through 17 countries in around 7 months, all in aid of Malaria Consortium.

Even more surprising is that 60% of UK mobile users claim to not even own a mobile with internet access and just 30% of these are interested in getting one. The picture gets worse for mobile operators with the revelation that even for upwardly mobile internet users and owners of smartphones, one third (31%) have never used their phone to connect to the internet, a quarter (24%) use it less than once a week and 8% tried it but don’t intend to do so again.

The theme of this year's Competition is Reimagining Learning and there are two types of awards:  21st Century Learning Lab Designers and Game Changers.

Aligned with National Lab Day as part of the White House's Educate to Innovate Initiative, the 21st Century Learning Lab Designer awards will range from $30,000-$200,000. Awards will be made for learning environments and digital media-based experiences that allow young people to grapple with social challenges through activities based on the social nature, contexts, and ideas of science, technology, engineering and maths.

The Game Changers category—undertaken in cooperation with Sony Computer Entertainment of America (SCEA) and Electronic Arts (EA), Entertainment Software Assocation, and the Information Technology Industry Council—will award amounts ranging from $5,000-$50,000 for creative levels designed with either LittleBigPlanet™ or Spore™ Galactic Adventures that offer young people engaging game play experiences and that incorporate and leverage principles of science, technology, engineering and math for learning.

thoughts for 2010 first of many !!

Well 2010 will certainly be interesting . The past years comment of the future being mobile have been passed Likewise with social media. If you haven't noticed the Developed Countries are already there and to be honest the developing countries are mobilising faster than the developed ones .

Predictions comments for 2010 Things will be:

• Embedded. Connectivity via wifi or via the humble sim card will become the norm in sat navs, digital photoframes and importantly TV's.

• Whats Television the fragmentation on what is television will continue ,

• Transferable media will be transferable via WiFi ,Near Field Communication (NFC) in its various flavours Jet stream transferring data over very short distances at 530Mbsec  is one that appears in well known brands of laptops and TVs.

• HTML 5 wil appear giving much of the offline functionally of google gears and the like ( google think so they have stopped developing gears).

• Ambient this is a wierd one wearable, Context and location aware .

• Integrated technology will not only as now appear in the home but me much more widely integrated

• Green a difficult one but manufacturers have got get real and they are. power management, kit life has got be extended.

 

The big developments will be in a few words

• Battery Technology
• Wireless charging

Interesting project that I had joy of being exposed to yesterday. Great use of appropriate technology to enhance the learning experience.

This exciting new leadership award enables students to gain valuable experience and responsibility within the field of ICT. Similar to the Sports Leaders Award, the YICTL is comprised of six units. Each unit develops a different aspect of leadership.

Some of the leadership tasks might include: support in ICT classes, support/ delivery to small groups, create resources for cross-curricular ICT, run ICT clubs/ workshops for staff and pupils, extended workshops for gifted and talented students, develop and maintain annual update news/ newsletter, run ICT clubs/ workshops in local primary schools, develop a student council website and forum (intranet).

Evidence for the award is collected, logged and presented through the e-portfolio (see link above). It can be in the form of text, video, images, sound recordings and more. To pass, all criteria must be met and sufficient evidence presented to your tutor/moderator.

Many years ago well I think summer 2005 . Some bright spark (actually Judy Clark) invited me to gig at the National College for School Leadership on mobile learning .
I remember turning up to meet an eclectic mix of people Mike Sharples Birmingham University Bob Harrison representing Toshiba, Geof Stead of tribal , Dave Whyley of Wolverhampton (learning2go) and Steve Sidaway of TXTtools. Well it was an OK gig but relationships made changed my thoughts directions in technology forever.

Had a brilliant week but really had my mindset challenged. Now reguar readers know I keep banging on the fact the next billion users of the internet will be from mobile devices. Read earlier post from ITU. But what ive missed is the role that limited bandwidth will have on those users. even simple webpages will take ages to load if they load at all no youtube etc just think . Ive dscovered Mixit this week thanks to Adele Botha this is a social etworking app for mobile phones you never heard of it. Well wake up there are 16million users in africa . The role of the mobile cevice that nevers go near a desktop laptop to sync is vital. the role of sms cant be over stressed and the wake up to the fact outrageous charges for data no longer tolerated in most of europe are alive and well in Africa .

So bit of a rant dont go mad on media rich papers if you want to reach a wider audience think lean code and good old wap .

But this really had made me think and also not to get diverted by the shiny and new  of the I or G Phone if we are serious about digtal inclusion outside developed north think second generation devices not fifth genration moble devices.
