Forget the term EDA or PDA its a MID

Well according to the stuff coming out of the consumer electronics show (CES) in the states.

Interstingly the producer eeepc ASUS has three different offerings in the mobile device market and interestingly a four if you count there internet radio.
Mobile Internet Device

  1. eepc the linux based entry level low format device
  2. R50A UMPC a so called rich media device with connectivity and GPS functinality built in.
  3. P527 Cell (mobile )Phone.
other manufactures are follwing this degree of vertical integration so forget WMD and lookout for MID. Theyve won three awards at CES.

Division occurring the small format UMPC market

Its seems to me with appearance of flash memory only device like asuseepcc and so called rich media devices with conventional micro hard drives . Is making a distiction into:

1)Flash memory smaller capacity and slower processor UMPC often running non windows software like linux. with a low price tag.
2) Rich media more powerful devices runing windows based software with huge conventional micro drives and more powerful processors .

Toshiba one of the major suppliers of micro format hard drives (Toshiba) who interestingly don't make a UMPC have just announced huge micro format hard drives http://www.engadget.com/2007/12/14/toshiba-intros-five-capacious-new-1-8-inch-hard-drives/
which will add to the division buy which type meets your need but remember the future is mobile !!!

The times they are a changing

The debate of PDA (EDA) is getting more difficult. The rise of truly smart phones Nokia95 Toshiba g900 and meaningful UMPC like the UMPC 650 nice photo eh !! is really making the term a bit historic in my humble opinion. Samsung blazed the way with the Q1 and more recently remtech have hit the ground running with the very sleek and practical UMPC650 . The UMPC650 is here its not just a proof of concept box as to price let you know !

Now smart phone UMPCwhat's your weapon of choice or are they both part of the business offer armoury . In education use it strikes me the umpc might be the logical choice but watch the space going to be exciting . But remember its noty about the device its how you use it !!!

Intel Toshiba samsung are all working hard in this area. Looking forward to BETT2008 already

The UMPC dies. And no one notices. not sure on this one ??

From TG Daily

We just started to like the concept of the UMPC. But the truth of the matter is that the UMPC, at least in the shape we saw these little computers over the past year, will join the Tablet PC in a niche, far away from the eyes of the mass market. The UMPC will disappear from our radar as quickly as it surfaced.

http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/31899/113/

Dont know about some of these comments tablets I think still will happen the UMPC isn't quite there yet but does it have a place or is it to big to be ultra mobile or to small to be useful . Be interesting to see what happens see slide show from intels key analyst spring forum here

Samsung up the anti in mini hard drives

Well we are all getting excited about Ultra Mobile Portable Computers with flash drives and then Samsung breed more life back into conventional hard drives. A 120gb 1.8 Inch hard drive yes 120gb 1.8inch drive . What is exciting is the very low pwer consumption because running out of power is what us mobile evangelists hate.
