Much has been made of learners being
so deeply embroiled in technology that they see it as commonplace, neutral and
invisible. We call it ‘Web 2.0’, they use it without thinking. Teachers are
failing to keep pace with awareness of this technology, never mind incorporating
it into their practice. This workshop involves a rapid tour of some Web 2.0
tools that are already used by learners, and examines issues such as the
barriers to teaching staff deploying these tools to support learning. The
session also gives participants a chance to create artefacts.

I when in the office saw at least four cube around the office . Whats really cool is Dan Sutch "Crusader of the creative side" of Futurelab is going to run a competition getting people to email in photos of where they put their cubes.
Could this be the rubics cube of 2007 who knows but watch out for the competition.
Just back from Mobile and wirless'ing Glasgow and picked up through my feeds Mark Van Hoot is coming to Handheld. Mark is a really well respected member of the e-learning communitiy and he has view on things. Marks blog is worth a read you may not like what he says all the time but you should read it. UK 4.5 billion text messages sent in March !!!
The majority of the now 2.5+ billion mobile subscribers are located in developing countries. This is a stunning new kind of event for our planet: the dominance of leading edge technology is emerging from marginalises places. That has not happened before, particularly on the enormous scale of the mobiles.
Pupils at a school in Buckinghamshire have been getting extra help with GCSE revision by texting their teachers. Far from banning mobile phones, Cottesloe School in Wing has decided to turn modern technology to its advantage in an attempt to improve results. Since Easter, Year 11 pupils have been able to message teachers from home with revision queries and get a text answer. The school said “text mentoring” had also seen teachers messaging pupils with revision prompts and exam tips.

Background
In order to successfully participate in 21st century society requires individuals to be competent and confident users of information and communication technology (ICT). ICT has changed the way we work, learn and live our lives. Over 90% of all new jobs require ICT skills and the growth in government and commercial online services means that people who are unable to use them are increasingly at a disadvantage.
Employers require employees with ever improving levels of ICT skills and knowledge therefore 20 million employees will need to continuously enhance their skills. Almost 17 million adults do not use the Internet and are at risk of serious social and economic disadvantage.
At the moment there are many new initiatives and developments underway that make it important to be aware of the main trends in assisting people to develop their ICT skills. Some of the new developments are:
* ICT as a Skill for Life
* ICT Functional Skills
* ICT Diploma
* the relationship between ICT and other skills for life
* vendor standards
* ITQ.
The main aims of the event are to:
* understand the ICT needs of the country
* gain an understanding of the main developments within ICT users
skills
* gain an understanding of the relationships between the different
developments.
Objectives of the event
Participants will gain an understanding of:
* the new ICT User Skills developments (e.g. MyGuide - how to
reach the millions of people who do not use the Internet)

Interoperability of ICT in Education -
- Will it serve the needs of National Initiatives?
Never before has there been such a strong need for ICT systems in education to inter-operate. A number of very significant national initiatives in the UK depend critically on interoperability. The conference will discuss whether development of interoperability is on track to make these initiatives a success or whether further action is needed. The initiatives potentially at risk include:
- Implementation of learning platforms.
- The Building Schools for the Future programme.
- Personalisation of learning.
- The 14-19 Diplomas.

The E.E.P. is assembling a range of speakers drawn from industry, education and national/regional agencies, to provide a view of the current state of play with regard to development of interoperability. This will be followed by open discussion to identify where action is satisfactory and where it needs to speed up or be started.
The topics to be covered are:
- Work on UK SIF (Schools Interoperability Framework) and MIAP (Moving Information Across Partners) and how these will impact on interoperability of school/college MIS and VLE (learning platform) systems, and the MLE systems envisaged for BSF.
- Interoperability of content with school/college learning platforms and end-user devices, including issues relating to the use of handheld devices, interactive whiteboards, social networking sites and new devices that are being developed.
- Developments to enable single-sign-on to federated systems and diverse sources of content, such as Shibboleth, and inter-operation of the networks that will be required to enable the 14-19 Diplomas to be offered nationwide with equality of provision.
- Best practice standards for management of school/college networks to achieve a balance between child safety and network security, while permitting access to the range of content, software and social networking sites that educators need in order to be able to help young people learn effectively and develop safe online practices.
